Alistair Stewart
Independent performer, music producer and band member with a strong research interest in contemporary audiovisual culture, affiliated with folk-rock duo Wildfire, internet-based project Keygen Data Life Engine and artistic partnership Cryptofauna utilising found footage, images and sound and reappropriating the audiovisual material into mash-ups and sound collage. The work I create meditates on static continuation, or endlessly replaying and reconfiguring the past, exploiting repetition and chance whilst dealing with a perceived opposition between the complex heterogeneous culture of mediated experience we strive for, i.e. the freedom from freedom itself, and a minimalist aesthetic that forms a reaction against this complexity through a conservative ideological critique of the new. My working practice often involves aspects of collage and exploring the limitless potential of this technique within both analogue and digital systems to imitate glitches a multiple exposures.
